What if AI improves faster than your LegalTech product?

Publication date: · Dmitrijus Bogdanovas · Pravnik.rs

A legal AI product can take a year to build. A new model release can change what that product needs to do overnight.

That creates an uncomfortable question: are we building lasting value, or packaging a limitation that the next model will remove?

If a product mainly adds elaborate instructions, fixed sequences and a polished chat window, its advantage may shrink as general-purpose models improve. That is a business risk, not a prediction that every legal AI company will disappear.

Some value is harder to replace: access to reliable legal sources, knowledge of a particular jurisdiction, the firm’s own documents, permission controls, traceable work and a place in the lawyer’s actual workflow. A better model still needs the right materials and the authority to use them.

For a small law firm, I would ask a practical question before buying: if the underlying model becomes twice as capable, will this product become more useful—or less necessary?

The strongest answer is a service that turns improved capability into a concrete result for the client. A completed document, a checked source, a task carried through.

My view: build around the client’s problem, and be ready to simplify the machinery as the models improve. The product should benefit from progress rather than depend on today’s limitations.
